In a telephone interview with PL, Gloria la Riva, a member of the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five, said during the opening of the trial in El Paso, Texas, the criminal’s lawyers tried to discredit the documents and testimony from the Island.
The leader reported that, with great technical complexity, the lawyers said their client never lied in denying he was involved in the explosion of bombs in hotels in Havana that left one person dead, because he was only the leader and thus spoke general terms.
They obviously have a very weak defense, because Posada Carriles clearly lied, but only faces charges of perjury and immigration issues, said La Riva. The U.S. authorities are not taking into account the criminal terrorist record of the accused.
For his part, the lawyer José Pertierra, who represents the Government of Venezuela in the trial against Posada Carriles, said the lawyers tried to convince Judge Kathleen Cardone that she authorize them to tell the jury that Cuba falsified records, misrepresented evidence and fabricated the testimony of witnesses.
However, the judge rejected these arguments holding that the defense presented no concrete evidence, adds CubaDebate.
