During the ceremony, also attended by dozens of locals and Cuban professionals making their contribution there in the education and health sectors, Alarcon and Borge highlighted the historic significance of Marti’s work and thoughts.
In this regard, they referred to the influence of Marti’s political thoughts on the future generations of revolutionaries, Prensa Latina news agency reports.
They also extolled the example of patriotism and dignity set by Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez —internationally known as the Cuban Five—, who were arrested and given harsh sentences for monitoring right-wing anti-Cuba groups in South Florida that were organizing and carrying out terrorist attacks against the Caribbean nation.
“We feel very proud that Jose Marti was a friend of our great poet Ruben Dario, and we feel very proud to be brothers of Cuba,” Borge said.
“It is in Marti’s admirable stoicism and altruism, in his devotion to his people and his homeland, that we find the origin of Cuba and of our five comrades as a reproduction of Marti’s spirit and virtues that he left as a legacy for all Cubans,” added Alarcon.
Ricardo Alarcon heads the Cuban delegation that is participating in the 17th Forum of Sao Paulo, which concludes on Friday in Managua.
