Lisbeth and Ivette, daughters of Ramon Labañino and Rene Gonzalez, respectively, read the messages they wrote also on behalf of Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez, incarcerated since 1998 for monitoring the activities of terrorist groups planning actions against Cuba from US territory, with the complicity of Washington.
In his letter, Ramon expressed his gratitude for the privilege of having been appointed Delegates of Honor to the Congress.
René’s greeting to this fiesta of joy, patriotism and hope for a better future for the world and for Cuba was also very optimistic, in a society striving to build a fairer and more humane society every day, a society full of solidarity, one in which in a meeting like the 5th Congress nobody will have to talk about these or other everyday horrors.
On behalf of The Five, they wished success to the Congress, because the pioneer children of today will be the workers, farmers, intellectuals and combatants of tomorrow, and because therefore the future of Cuba depended a lot on the Congress.
The reading of the messages opened the plenary session of the forum, held at the Ernesto Guevara Pioneer Children’s Palace, which was attended by Olga Lidia Tapia, member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) and other leaders from the PCC, the government, the Young Communists’ League and mass organizations.
Also present was Jose Ramon Fernandez, vice-president of the Council of Ministers, who was one of the 10 Delegates of Honor to the Congress, a group headed by Commander in Chief Fidel
Castro and President Raul Castro.
“Winning the Future” was the event’s slogan while the responsibility and commitment of new generations to their homeland and the future, as guarantors for the historic continuity of the Revolution, was among topics for the delegates’ reflection and debates.
Following this final session was a political-cultural gala at Havana’s Kart Marx Theater, on the occasion of the 50th birthday of the pioneer children’s organization and the 49th anniversary of the founding of the Young Communists’ League. (acn).
